Windows Vista is the fast selling Windows operating system in Microsoft's history. The company has sold over 100-million licenses. While it introduced many new technologies and features, these were not without challenges. In particular, customers reported issues with quality and compatibility.

To address these challenges and improve the Windows experience, Microsoft released Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1). SP1 improves the reliability, performance, and security of Windows Vista. For example, SP1 provides faster file copying, large file handling, and file decompression. SP1 also adds support for emerging technologies and standards and helps enterprises better optimize their IT infrastructures.

Windows Vista has a new deployment architecture, which includes image-based setup, offline servicing, and so on. As a result, deploying Windows Vista service packs is different than deploying Windows XP service packs. This white paper describes how to deploy SP1 in a scenarios from small-scale scenarios using Windows Update to large-scale scenarios using System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007. This white paper was written and published by Microsoft Corporation.
