This white paper introduces Group Policy preferences, a feature new in Microsoft Windows Server 2008, and describes how you can use Group Policy preferences to better deploy and manage operating system and application settings. Group Policy preferences enable information technology professionals to configure, deploy, and manage operating system and application settings they previously were not able to manage using Group Policy. Examples include mapped drives, scheduled tasks, and Start menu settings. For many types of operating system and application settings, using Group Policy preferences is a better alternative to configuring them in Windows images or using logon scripts. Jerry Honeycutt wrote this white paper, which Microsoft Corporation publishes.

Hello,
I deployed Group Policy preferences but seem to have an issue with creating Shortcuts. I would like to add Internet Explorer to the Quick launch for all users when they first log onto a new Vista build but it never works and i get no errors in event log. I've tried both Computer Setting and User Setting. Here is the preference:

Action: Create
Name: Launch Internet Explorer
Target Type: File System Object
Location: Quick Launch ToolBar
Target Path: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
Start In: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
Comment: Finds and displays information and Web sites on the
Icon File Path: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
Icon Index 0
