I have been using MDT for a bit now, and it's going very well.  I think our next step as a company is to start pushing out installs automated.  The trick is, we have over 2000 computers, so going to something like SMS or Landesk is about as likely as me winning the lottery (120-200k is pretty hard to justify).  Anyone know of anything cheap that would allow automated software pushes?  I'm not worried about pushing software to individuals on a case by case basis.  I just want a way to push out a new version or new package to everyone on our domain.  We've been using a homemade app that is basically a chain PSexec.  It works okay, but it is slow and is still to manual when you need to deploy to over 2000 computers.

I should mention that we don't want to use group policy to push out apps.  I'm not sure if our Network Engineers are just a little to paranoid or what, but they don't like the idea of adding apps into group policy.  Unfortunately, there isn't anything I can do about it.

you could use PS tools to initialize an MDT Task Sequence which only involves the "Software Installation" Tasks

This method uses two free tools and gives you the added benefits of Customizations\Logging

Your network engineers should think about deploy software with GPOs once again. This is a fantasic way to deploy software without SMS or other 3rd party tools for free! In many articles Mircosoft recommends to deploy software with GPOs. And why not? Can you explain?

you shoud create a Task Sequence like the one described in here:
http://blogs.technet.com/benhunter/archive/2007/02/26/how-to-manually-use-a-bdd-task-sequence-to-test-application-installation.aspx

and then You should find a way to run the Litetouch.wsf Script that will execute it remotly

FarmerPete,

I understand that Configuration Manager is out of the question, but have you consider System Center Essentials? Also, if you want a cheap way to filter application installations based a variety of critera, take a look at the task sequencer script that's in the Download Library.

Best, Jerry

It looks like System Center Essentials is limited to 500 computers :-( The trick is, my company is a big company, but SMS and it's competitors just cost to much. It's hard to justify something that costs as much (if not much more) than hiring a full time position, especially when we are "managing" to make it with what we have in place now.

Oh,

I didn't catch the "more than 2000" computers bit in your original post.

Do you have a common deploy point in your company? Would you be able to push the install
via GPO pointing to a common share? Or is that the kind of thing your Network Dept is afraid
of?

We do not have a common deployment point. :-(
