Greetings,

I'm using WAIK in a VMWare ESX 3.5 environment to create images for our lab (and ultimately for production). I've got two nagging issues that I can't seem to resolve.

The first issue is that I can't seem to disable Windows Update. We will use WSUS for all patching, so I want to prevent the servers from enabling Windows Update until we configure it for WSUS. I've configured  the {platform}_Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup_neutral OOBE settings as follows:

NetworkLocation=work
ProtectYourPC=3

but even with these settings, the image enables Windows Update for automatic updating during the initial startup. Is there some kind of special magic needed to disable WU?

The second issue is minor, but annoying. Since the server images are designed to run only on VMWare, I have no use for any type of power management. I've set the {platform}_Microsoft-Windows-Powercpl_neutral  PreferredPlan to the 8c5e... value defined in the system for "high performance".

I feel like I must be missing something - a peer setting maybe - since both of these settings seem to be ignored, while all others are working.

Thanks for your insights!

Glenn

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\NoAutoUpdate"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU\UseWUServer"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUServer"
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\WUStatusServer"

Those are the keys controlling WSUS and AU. Try working with those.

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\AUOptions"

This key controls how automatic updates function.  Look on TechNet as the different DWORD options are located there.

Yeah - familiar with that structure - I was trying to define it simply through the WAIK configuration file, which I thought would have initialized those values based on what I asked for.

Strangely, I allowed 4 hotfixes to be installed, then re-generated my image from that updated system, and now all the WAIK settings seem to take effect - no AutoUpdate and no Power Management, as defined. I wonder if one of those updates changed how W2K8 behaves when presented with the "no update" setting.

Thanks for the reply.
