Hi all,

We are a full XP shop at this time and have been using FAST for years.  I'm in the process of setting up USMT in our environment.  Here are the steps I have executed thus far:

Step 1 – Manually Install the x86 version of USMT 3.0 on the client.

Step 2 – Copy the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\Samples\USMT30_x86.ddf from Pelssms1 (MDT server) to C:

Step 3 – Executed the makecab.exe command and created the cab file.

Step 4 – Placed Cab file into \distribution\tools\x86 directory on MDT server

Step 5 – Created a Migration Data location on the server called \\servername\usmt301\migdata & placed the USMT data files in this directory (Uncertain if this is necessary?)

Step 5 – Executed the litetouch.vbs from the MDT File Share on the source PC

Step 6 – After I choose my Task Sequence, I select Refresh the Computer

Step 7 – Then I tell it to save the data by Automatically determine the location and allow the system to determine the best location to backup the data.  I chose not to backup the entire system.

Here are my issues:

1)     After Step 7 the Task Sequence engine fires off and when it gets to running action: Capture User State, the task sequence window disappears.

2)     I am uncertain how or if I need to configure customsettings.ini for USMT

3)     Is there anything I am missing as far as configuration for USMT with the process I’ve outlined?

Thanks! Old C.

I have one more question I need to add.  Where is USMT looking at for the source files when it executes scanstate?  I believe this is my problem when the task sequence window disappears.  It is unable to find scanstate, and therefore, closes.

Old. C,

I'm pretty sure that with the latest version of USMT and the latest release of MDT 2008, you no longer have to make the .cab file for the distribution share. All you need is the .msi file in the Tools folder. That can save you a step.

The best way to know what USMT is doing is to look at the script. It's looking in several places, falling back gracefully to older behavior. I don't recall the exact name of the script, but you can find it easily. There is a big clump of If statements right in the middle where it is testing various paths.

Best, Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I haven't upgraded to MDT 08 yet.  I'm still running the original version, which at the time they called 1.0.  I'll track down that log file and thanks for your input.

If anyone else has similar experience in getting this setup, please let me know.

Found this on Ben Hunter's blog:

USMT Logs

BDD 2007 automatically adds the logging switches to save the USMT logs to the BDD log file location

USMTEstimate.log - Log created when estimating the USMT requirements

USMTCapture.log - Log created when capturing data

USMTRestore.log - Log created when restoring data

I figured out the problem with the Task Sequence window disappearing once the action "Capture State" started.  I removed the following entries from my customsettings.ini:

ScanStateArgs=/v5 /o /c /efs:copyraw

LoadStateArgs=/v:5 /c /lac /lae
