Hello all.

I'm driving myself crazy trying to figure out if MS Deployment Services or the Deployment Toolkit..or what can allow me to boot a WinPE session and do an in-place non-destructive upgrade to Vista. I don't need dual boot.

I recently figured out how to build Vista images with the AIK workbench and boot to them with MDS. So this is perfect for bare-metal or 'fresh' installations of Vista. The problem is we can't spend the time to go around and recreate all of our users' settings (USMT) and applications. We need to be able to upgrade an existing installation of XP SP3 to Vista. Are we stuck going around with a CD and running the upgrade from within Windows?

Thank you much,

OK I poked around more and found a utility called "wizardeditor" that allows you to edit XML files. It's similar to the Office setup wizard.

Anyway, I noticed that there is a screen called "Choose a migration type" which gives you the option to refresh or upgrade.

I don't see this option. How do I enable it?

I think you get this option if you run the script \\servername\Distribution$\Scripts\litetouch.vbs from within the existing Windows XP that you're upgrading.

See the document Preparing_for_LTI_Tools.doc, the section named "Running the Windows Deployment Wizard".

How do I tell WinPE to run that script?

I don't think you run it from within WinPE, but instead you run it from within the Windows XP OS you're upgrading.

This, I believe, will allow you to run an upgrade of XP to Vista, but is this what you're after, or do you just want the USMT to migrate user settings / documents / etc after doing a clean install of Vista on the same PC?

If it's the latter you just need some process to run the USMT "collection" under Windows XP prior to re-building the PC with MDT. You could do this with something like SMS/SCCM or with a script that you give to whomever kicks of the rebuilds. Then you get tell the MDT Wizard where your USMT file is located for the PC being reimaged.

Thanks again,

We don't need a refresh / clean install in most cases.

I've run into some weird issues with using the upgrade from inside Windows. One is that if I select "allow applications to be installed on upgrade" when the Windows Deployment Wizard gets to that step and I select an application, after it finishes installing the task sequence then stops. It thinks it's finished and doesn't install Windows. I have to rerun litetouch.vbs again to get it to go. argh, very frustrating.
