Good day to all,

I have been struggling to get MDT up and going to deploy Xp images. I can push the sources and load a computer that way with no errors at all, but when it comes to capturing an image after loading the OS keeps failing. the error basically states that the image capture failed with a rc=1 error.

Working on MDT has been nothing but a frickin' nightmare!!! I see the potential MDT has but the time and testing  already invested and not to forget the very vague instructions especially for Xp, truly has the potential to give appearances to my bosses and co-workers that I am a frickin' idiot! And after weeks of trying to maneuver through this process has done nothing but create extreme frustrations, and doubts about my abilities! And I am really running out of time to get this service implemented! Any help to create or capture a .wim to deploy Xp would be Greatly appreciated.

I found the best way for capturing images was to install the OS using litetouch but to only "prepare for capture". Then i can do all my updates, customizations etc.. I then run sysprep and shut the machine down. Boot into the Generic WinPE that litetouch creates and then run imagex.exe from the \tools\x86 (or x64) directory. This way i have had no problems at all capturing XP images. I have then obviously added a task in to deploy that .wim file.

I have also found that personally i prefer to create my images on virtual machines. Im using hyper v for this and it seems to work a treat. That way when deploying the image to actual machines if it fails then i know it must be a hardware issue of sorts. Not sure if this is a good or bad way of doing things but it seems to have worked for me.

p.s i know what you mean about the potential of MDT and the ability to spend ages on getting it working!

Paul, imagex.exe should be in the distribution\tools\x86 (or x64) directory on your WDS server. Its part of the WAIK install i think. And this link describes the main commands to get you ip and running -

I should have added that after the sysprep, boot into the generic winpe. then at the command prompt you need to do a net use Z: \\\distribution$ and enter the correct credentials. Browse to z:\tools\x86
