I am trying to configure a desktop deployment based on the make and model of a PC.  I am using a Dell OptiPlex GX620 while trying to get this to work.  If I run ZTiGather.wsf and add in a msgbox to display the make and model that it finds it tells me that it is Dell Inc. OptiPlex GX620.  I then went to the database tab in the deployment workbench, right clicked on Make and model and created a new line item.  Filled in id: 1 make: Dell Inc.  and Model: OptiPlex GX620.  My Problem is the install doesn't appear to connect to the database.  Shouldn't a connection show up in the ztigather.log.  I have attached the log from the workstation.

thanks

Dan

Are you saying the deployment is not getting your settings from the DB?

That is correct.  I have several applications that I want to install and they are not getting installed.  I don't know how to check if it is a problem with my DB setup or if I am not getting connected to the database to begin with.

We have been using RIS for about 1 1/2 and I am trying to convert to the WDD using wim images.  I thought using the database to assign applications would help to simplify keeping the apps we install with the images up to date.  If we have several apps that are installed on all machines and some that are installed on certain models is this the best way to do that?

You may have hit a known bug in Microsoft Deployment.

Bug: Applications are not Selected Properly When Set through CustomSettings.ini or through the Database

See http://blogs.technet.com/msdeployment/ for the fix for this and two other known bugs in Microsoft Deployment.

That Still didn't work.  So I put a trace on the database and started a connection.  That gave me an error that said I couldn't remotely manage a database.  Turns out that SQL Express doesn't allow remote management or connections to a database by default.  I had to manage the database instance and enable remote pipes.

This problem is fixed.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm having the exact same issue.

I did the change inside wizard.hta for the bug and I also checked to see if remote pipe was enable in SQL.

Everything look good.

If I run ZTIGather.wsf on a PC after the deployement (with custumsettings.ini in the same folder) all the connection to the SQL server are OK. But if I look at the ZTIGather.log after the deployment I don't see any of my database settings from customsettings.ini.

Anybody have an idea??

Thanks,

Dan

bn2hunt,

Quick question: when you configured the database in BDD, did you configure the SQL share? You must do so in order for the scripts to connect to the server running SQL.

Best, Jerry

yes, I had the share created before I configured the Database. My problem was that I was using SQL Express and I had to allow remote connections. SQL Express denies remote connections by default.
