Hello,

does anyone know what is the technical reason for using the SMS 2003 OSD capture CD to capture an image ? The reason why I am asking is because we recently just tried to import a custom WIM image into SMS 2003 OSD that was NOT captured with the SMS 2003 OSD capture CD and all seems to work fine.

While someone from Microsoft was able to tell me that for SCCM 2007 there is no requirement anymore to use the OSD capture CD, i did not get an answer why it was needed for SMS 2003.

I would be realy interested in understanding what the SMS 2003 OSD capture CD does differently instead of simply using imgex.exe /capture natively ?

The reason for my question is that i want to be able to build a custom image independently of the remote SMS infrastructure where the image is supposed to be deployed.

You will use SMS 2003 OSD only when you will want to do a Zero Touch Installation using BDD 2007 / MDT 2008. To do a ZTI using Windows XP, when you do your capture cd, all computer must have the same hcl as the computer you used to make your capture cd.
