Hello,

i'm preparing the deployment of Vista in a 140 Computer scenario.
I will use Imagex to image a master, using an unattend file and sysprep; i use an Altiris Deployment Server to deploy the image over the network.

How can i do all the settings for a default user: so that when a new user logon on the computer he haves all the predefined settings (f.e.: corporate logo, desktop, taskbar, etc....)

Thanks
Franco

You can implement a Default User profile which encompasses all your required settings as this (in my opinion) is the easiest way to standardise the desktop experience for the user (next to using Group Policy of course).

To learn how to create a Default User profile, please take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319974

Placing this default profile on workstations is a little trickier. The simplest option would be to place this inside the captured image of your master, however this makes it difficult to update the default user profile when you realise something was missed or needs changing.

I believe the best option by far is to publish the default user profile in the NETLOGON share. By default, Windows XP or Vista computers will check the NETLOGON share first for a Default User profile before looking at their own local Default User profile. There are some caveats to this though. For example, you can only have one default profile for all users in your organisation as you cannot specify multiple default profiles. This isn't too bad considering you can use Group Policy to fine tweak a user's profile for the department/section to which they belong.

If you are deploying to a solely Windows Vista environment, then create a "Default User" folder in the root of your NETLOGON share and copy the contents of the Default User profile there.

If you are deploying to a mixed environment of Vista and XP, then create a "Default User" folder and copy the XP Default User profile to this folder. Then create a "Default User.v2" folder and copy the Vista Default User profile there*.

* By default, Windows Vista will also check to see if there is a ".v2" version of the "Default User" folder if two such folders exist in the NETLOGON share. You must remember to never mix XP and Vista Default User profiles together.

I sincerely hope this is of some use to you (or I've just wasted 10 minutes of my life :p )

Cheers

Mark
