Does anybody know how to reliably find the Office 2003 Service Pack version, via a script and  preferably the registry?

The value in the Uninstall key does not provide consistent results.  There was a KB article (which I don't have at the moment) but was titled How to Determine your Office 2003 version.  They give methods but all produce varied results.

I was able to locate a branch in the registry which is related to Windows Installer but the key path is not easy (it is some variation of the Product Code/GUID.

I am guessing the inconsistency is a result of how the update was installed (Windows Update, standalone install, etc.)

Any help is appreciated.

Have you considered pulling the build number out of one of the Office binaries directly? You can do this pretty easily by using VBScript.

Yes.  I am using vbscript.  I investigated this a few weeks ago but I believe what we found is that some of the updates are changing the build numbers.  According to the MS article, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821549, this should have worked but it does not.  We are preparing to deploy SP3 but our inventory reports that some of the version are newer than SP2 (have SP3 version) when we are positive that we do not have SP3 installed.

Sigh,

I don't have Office 2003 any longer, so I can't help you tinker with this to figure it out. It sounds like you have our hands full.
